Dear Hoopeston Area Families and Staff,
I am writing to clarify what happened at the start of the school day on Tuesday, October 20. I apologize for any confusion in our earlier communication. The situation was changing quickly and involved several agencies.
What happened Tuesday
On Tuesday morning, a carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor alerted employees to high levels in the High School kitchen. The Hoopeston Fire Department and Ameren were called to assess the situation. Hoopeston Fire confirmed the high reading and, as a safety precaution, cleared students and staff from both the Middle School and High School buildings. This happened at about the time school buses were arriving, so students were asked to remain on their buses and outside the buildings.
Ameren then arrived and confirmed the same high readings in the kitchen. They found several leaking gas valves and shut off the main gas supply to the kitchen area. An ambulance was also sent to check the kitchen staff as a precaution. Once the all-clear was given, students and staff were allowed to enter the buildings and begin their day.
Attendance
Any student who missed school because of this situation will not be counted absent for Tuesday, October 20. The Middle School and High School offices are reviewing attendance records to make sure no absences were recorded for that day.
Wednesday, October 21
On Wednesday morning, a smell was reported in the kitchen. We contacted Ameren right away, and they found a leaking gas valve. The valve has been repaired, and the kitchen exhaust hood is working properly. This equipment will be inspected frequently until it can be replaced.
Moving forward
Student and staff safety is our highest priority. We will review and clarify our safety and communication procedures for emergencies so that families and staff receive clear, timely information. Please contact the District Office if you have questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Robert Richardson
Superintendent, Hoopeston Area School District
