John Shaffer combined a stellar high school cross country and track career with an equally outstanding Division I college career.
John was an outstanding cross country runner at Hoopeston Area High School. He was a two time All-State runner who finished 12th in the state in 1997 and 8th in state in 1998. Shaffer collected three individual County championships in cross country. In 1998, he became the only Hoopeston Area Cross Country runner to ever win all the meets run during the regular season. He also set a Hoopeston Area course record that was run on school grounds.
John was also a stellar performer on the track side of his career at Hoopeston. He was a three- time state medalist in the 3200m. He finished 9th in 1997, 7th in 1998, and 6th in 1999. He also finished 10th in the 1600m state run his junior year and 11th in the state 1600m run his senior year. Mr. Shaffer was the Gene Armor State Indoor Champion in the 3200m run and placed 4th in the 1600m run. He was also the 3200m champion of the track county meet his sophomore, junior, and senior years and was county champion of the 1600m county run during his junior and senior year.
John’s running career continued when he continued his education at Butler University. He participated in Butler’s Midwestern Collegiate Conference championship teams as a freshman and a sophomore. As a sophomore at Butler, he was named to the All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference Team and placed 6th overall. His track performance at Butler was stellar as well. He was the Midwestern Collegiate Conference champion in the steeple chase his freshman and sophomore years and placed third in the Junior National Championships in the steeple chase between his freshman and sophomore years. He was the Indoor champion of the 1600m Midwestern Collegiate Conference, as well, his sophomore year. Shaffer transferred to Illinois State University for his junior and senior years. His junior year he was a member of the Illinois State University Missouri Valley Conference Championship team.
John continues his love for running in his adult years. In 2010 he ran in the Chicago Marathon in 2:54:45, and placed 498th in a field of over 45,000 runners. Besides his love for running John grew up with a passion for music. He graduated magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s in Music Education and Summa Cum Laude with a masters in Music Education. Mr. Shaffer is currently employed with the El Paso, Illinois, school district and directs two high school show choirs and one junior high show choir.
