Kevin Root

Kevin graduated from Hoopeston-East Lynn in 1986, after a memorable career in Cornjerker basketball. 

While attending Hoopeston-East Lynn, he played on three state bound teams. They received two Class A 3rd place finishes in 1985 and 1986. During his junior year, Kevin’s team had a record of 31-3 and took 3rd place at the Assembly Hall during the 1985 Class A state tournament. They returned the following year with another 3rd place finish and a record of 32-2.

During his senior year in 1986, Kevin was named to the IHSA State Tournament 1st Team, Wauseca Conference MVP and team MVP. He was also named to the IBCA All Star team. Over the span of his three year varsity stint at Hoopeston, he scored 1,025 points.

Kevin went on to attend Eureka College where he was a three year starter on the Eureka College Men’s Basketball team. He is the Eureka College  All Time Career Assist Leader with 579 assists and the All Time Single Season Assist Leader with 222 assists. Kevin served as Co-captain of the team his senior year and was named Co-Defensive Player and Co-MVP of his team.

Currently, he ranks fifth in the All Time Division III record for assist average with a 7.1 average. He led the division III record for many years. Kevin is also a member of the Eureka College Hall of Fame both as a member of the 1987 basketball team and as an individual member.

Kevin has been working in the Hoopeston Area school district for fifteen years. He was a physical education teacher and accepted the Athletic Director position in the Fall of 2000 and resigned Spring 2014. Kevin is currently teaching business courses at Hoopeston. He has served in various coaching capacities over his career in Hoopeston. He was the head soccer coach for eight years and was an assistant basketball coach for two years before transitioning to the head coaching position for 9 years. He currently is an assistant coach for HS Soccer, and head Boys HS Track coach.
