HAHS Announcements and Reminders: Picture Retakes: The final date for Picture retakes will be tomorrow, Tuesday, December 1st from 11- noon. Reminder if you are having your picture retaken, you need to bring in your original picture packet and turn it into the photographer. For First Semester Final Exams, all students are expected to take their finals. First Semester Final Exam grades can only HELP your grades, not hurt them. These scholarships range from a couple hundred dollars all the way up to full four year college tuition waivers. While many of our scholarships aren't due till the spring, there are still several that have due dates that are right around the corner. HAHS Students and Parents - News and Information As a reminder, this Thursday, November 12th we are looking forward to the return to in-person learning for all of our in-person learners. Students who chose remote learning will continue working remotely as normal for the remainder of the semester. Due to COVID-19, we will unfortunately not be able to hold our normal community Veteran's Day assembly as we have done in the past. However, on this special day tomorrow, we still want to be able to honor all of the outstanding men and women who have served our great country. Our fine arts department and our media department have been working over the last few months to get everything recorded to be able to provide a Veteran's Day program virtually for our community. It will be aired tomorrow on Veteran's Day at 9:00 am. It will be shown on New Wave Cable Channel 16. The video will also be linked to our school district webpage and left up for the entire day for people to view. All students who were normally in-person will need to access your first-hour google classroom and answer the attendance question for this week. This will count for your attendance for the whole week. You will do this again at the beginning of next week to count for our days of remote learning next week. Students who were fully remote learners prior to this week will continue to use their normal remote learning google classroom as they have done in the past for attendance. Again, it is very important that students answer this question each week that we are remote learning as it will count as your attendance for each week until we return to in-person learning. HAHS students this is just a reminder that PICTURE RETAKES will be on Monday, November 2nd. This will be for anyone who hasn’t had their picture taken yet or for anyone who wants their picture retaken. In order to have your picture retaken, you will need to bring in the uncut picture packet on the day of retakes and hand it to the photographer. High School Reminders: Students today is the last day to answer your attendance question for the week. If you haven’t done so yet, please make sure that is done by tonight. Please remember that this must be completed for attendance credit for this week. On Monday we start 2nd Qrt. Next week Progress Reports will be mailed out on Tuesday to all families with students 1st Qrt grades. However, please remember, student grades don’t reset at the end of the quarter. High school grades are calculated for the whole semester and not by quarter. So that means students who currently have low or failing grades still have time to bring them up before the end of the 1st semester. Parent-Teacher Conferences are next week on Wednesday, October 21st and Thursday, October 22nd from 3:00-6:30 each evening. Due to the COVID pandemic, we will be holding virtual conferences this semester and we encourage students and parents to set up virtual meetings or phone conferences with your teachers. This can be done by students or parents emailing the teacher directly to set up a time. While we encourage students and parents to set up virtual conferences, in-person conferences are also available by appointment.

As Mr. Richardson shared this morning the district will be going fully remote starting Tuesday, October 13th. We will be returning to in-person instruction starting Monday, October 26th. As a reminder, second quarter officially begins Monday, October 19th. During our fully remote learning time, students will still be held accountable for all their work and assignments and their grades will count. Please note that students still have the ability to set up appointments with their teachers to set up times to come in for one on one help or to set up virtual meetings or phone calls with teachers. Also please note that during our remote learning time all College Express and Dual Credit students will be remote as well during this time. Senior Reminder - Just a reminder that all 12th grade students are required by Illinois State Law to have a 2nd dose of the Meningitis shot. The High School office will need proof from a doctor that the shot has been given or proof that an appointment has been scheduled with a doctor's office to receive the shot no later than Wednesday, October 14th. Beginning on Thursday, October 15th your student will not be allowed to attend school until your student has received the meningitis shot and has turned in proof to the High school office. Freshmen Reminder - Just a reminder that all Freshmen students are required by Illinois State Law to have a completed IL physical along with the updated shot portion filled out or attached to the physical form. The deadline to have the IL State physical form or proof from your doctor that an appointment has been scheduled turned in to the High School office is Wednesday, October 14th. If we do not have either on file by that date the student will not be able to attend school beginning Thursday, October 15th until the physical is completed or we have proof of an appointment . Last week I sent out an all-call discussing our concern for the number of students who are failing classes because of missing assignments or not completing their work. First of all, I want to thank all of the students who have worked so hard this week to either maintain the great grades they already have or worked hard by turning in their work or by getting help this week to bring their grades back up. We are still very early in the semester and it is never too late to improve your grades! I wanted to remind both our students and our parents that this week Progress Reports will be going out to any student who has a D or an F. We encourage students and families to be checking their grades regularly through InfoNow which can be accessed at the bottom of the district website. In addition to this week’s Progress Reports and student and parental access to InfoNow, starting next week, HAHS will also be mailing home comprehensive progress reports at the end of every week to the parents of students who have an F in any of their classes. The comprehensive report will show the grades for each of the student’s classes as well as all of their points for assignments and any missing assignments or work up until that point. We hope that this will add an additional layer of support and communication for our students and parents as we work together to make sure all of our students are passing and graduate on time. HAHS Picture Day Students this is just a reminder that Picture Day is tomorrow. In an effort to be as paperless as possible, students and parents are encouraged to register online. Papers were sent home with students and there is also a link available on the school website. As a reminder, Remote Learning students are allowed to come to school between 12:30-3:00 after the in-person learners have left for the day to be able to come and get their pictures. Remote Learning students will still be screened before being able to enter to get their picture and will be required to wear a mask to enter the school. #CornjerkerPride
This is a reminder that tomorrow is the first day of school for both our in-person and our remote learners. For our in-person learners, the doors open at 7:50 am and classes begin at 8:20 am. When students arrive at school they will be screened and then will be given the opportunity to get breakfast. From there, they will be directed to their Homeroom 1st Hour Class. Students will be in school till 12:20 pm. Once dismissed, students will grab their sack lunch and leave school. Students needing to ride the bus will report to the library where they will eat and wait for the buses which will leave at 12:40 pm. For our remote learning students, students need to report to school at some point between 1:00-4:00 pm. Once here, students will be screened and then directed to the office where they will get their chromebook and sign any needed paperwork. They will then go to meet their teachers and to get signed up for their Google classrooms and ask them any questions they have. For all students, please remember that in order to receive your chromebook and charger, you must not have any outstanding charges or fees from previous years. If you do, those will have to be paid at the HS office before you receive your chromebook and charger for this year. #CornjerkerPride

An Important Message For HAHS Remote Learners: Students choosing to remote learn for the first semester at HAHS, please plan on coming to HAHS on Thursday, August 20th at some point between 1:00-4:00 pm. During this time, students will pick up their Chromebooks, charger, and sign the necessary paperwork. Students will be able to get help logging in to the school apps and their Google Classrooms. Also, students can ask questions about remote learning and meet their teachers to get individual class information and get their Google Classroom codes. Students are free to leave whenever they are done with getting their materials and login info. Graduation Update Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, in-person graduation for the class of 2020 was postponed to August 2nd. While a parade and virtual graduation were held in May, it was the hope that improved conditions would allow for in-person graduation to take place to honor our graduating seniors in the Class of 2020 with a traditional commencement ceremony. Unfortunately, due to the continuing concerns around COVID-19 and following Phase 4 guidance which prohibits the gathering of more than 50 people at a time, Hoopeston Area High School must cancel the planned makeup ceremony on August 2nd and no additional makeup date will be set. We can’t thank the Class of 2020 enough for all that they have done for our school and community and we wish them nothing but the best in the future!
I hope everyone is having a safe and enjoyable summer! This is just a quick note to let our students and staff know that the Illinois State Board of Education along with the Illinois Health Department have now released their joint transition guidance for starting the 2020-21 school year under Phase 4 of the Governor's Restore Illinois plan. While the high school office is officially closed during the month of July, district and building staff will be working throughout the remainder of the summer to get things lined up for the start of next school year. As more information becomes available and as plans are finalized we will be sure to get that information out to our students, family, and community as quickly as possible. Due to Illinois still being in Phase 3 and gatherings to be limited to no more than 10, unfortunately we will have to cancel the rescheduled date we had for prom. Due to continued uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 we will not again be rescheduling prom. Instead, we will be allowing this year’s seniors to return to join us at our prom next year. If you have not had a chance to turn in your chromebook yet, we will be open again on Monday June 1st from 9-12 and 1-3 for students to turn in their chromebooks and materials and pick up their report cards. If chromebooks and materials have not been turned in by the end of open hours on Monday, we will be sending out bills to those students who have yet to turn in their chromebooks. As a reminder, the cost of a new chromebook is $425 so please make sure you are getting them turned in if you haven’t already.

Freshmen/Sophomores/Juniors: All classwork must be completed and turned in no later than Wednesday, May 20th. As a reminder to students, we are giving grades for the semester. While a student's grades can not be harmed or lowered from the point of when we began the mandated closure if a student had an F in a class and did no work to increase their grades during remote learning that grade will stand. So any student who has yet to do so, please make sure you are getting in the work needed to make sure you are passing all of your classes and thus be on track to graduate.

Seniors, as a reminder the senior parade is scheduled for this Saturday at 10:00 am. Please be at the school no later than 9:30. The Hoopeston Jaycees have been kind enough to donate signs for every senior and those will be handed out at that time before leaving to start the parade from the Lorraine Theater. We ask that students all remain in their cars during this time to stay in compliance with social distancing guidelines. Also, our virtual graduation is set for this Sunday at 3:00 pm. It will be broadcast on New Wave Cable Channel 16 as well as a link will be posted on the district website for graduates and families to view. It will remain available on the site after it airs for anyone who couldn’t view it at that time. On Monday, May 18th seniors will be able to turn in any remaining books and college express textbooks they have as well as their Chromebooks from 8:00-12:00. Also, All Cap and Gowns must be turned back in at this time with no exceptions. We ask that cap and gowns are returned ironed and on a hanger to be ready for the Aug 2nd graduation ceremony. Once this is all completed, they will be able to pick up their diplomas as well as information on any scholarships or awards they may have received. Freshmen-Juniors: Chromebook return, locker cleanout, and report card hand out will be Tue May 26th from 8-Noon and 1-3 and then on Wed 8-Noon and 1-6. We ask that students make sure to return all materials and books including those students who have college express textbooks, and have their Chromebooks fully charged when they come.
Seniors: As a reminder, Graduation Caps can not be decorated. They must be returned Monday May 18th along with your graduation gown to be used for the Aug 2nd graduation and then we will be returning them to the rental company.

Teacher Appreciation Week On behalf of the admin team, we wanted to take a second and say thank you to all of the teachers and staff at HAHS. This has been a very difficult and trying year to say the very least. However, each and everyone one of you has handled it so amazingly well. You continue every day to be there for our students and help them to grow and succeed during this most difficult of times. Graduation Information IMPORTANT: All seniors have been emailed individually to their school email address detailing any outstanding fees they have. Seniors must have all cap and gown fees paid and all outstanding financial obligations met in order to get their cap and gowns. Seniors can pay their fees at pick up or any time prior to that during school open hours each week. Wednesday, May 6th - Locker Clean Out and Cap and Gown pick up from 8:00-12:00. (Any seniors with College Express Books will turn them in as well at this time) Once seniors have cleaned their lockers they will receive their cap and gowns and they will get their picture taken in front of the Cornjerker Banner to be used for the virtual graduation. Any senior who doesn’t come and get their cap and gown will have their senior picture used during the virtual graduation ceremony. Seniors will have their caps and gowns for pictures with their families up until May 18th. The school banner will also be made available during school open hours for seniors and parents to come in and get pictures if they choose to. Saturday, May 16th - Senior Parade at 10:00 am (Using Sweetcorn Festival parade route) Seniors will meet at the High School in the front parking lot at 9:30 am. Seniors are to be in their cars wearing their Caps and Gowns. Students will get instructions and then HAHS Teachers will be on hand to send off the seniors as they leave via police escort for the start of the parade at the Lorraine Theater. Seniors will have the chance to be honored by the community as they travel in their cars using the Sweetcorn Festival parade route starting at the Lorraine Theater and ending at McFerran Park. Sunday, May 17th - Virtual Graduation at 3:00 pm. HAHS will be broadcasting our virtual graduation ceremony at 3:00 pm to honor the planned graduation time of our seniors. The virtual graduation will be played on New Wave Cable Channel 16 and will be posted on the district webpage for people to view. The virtual graduation will include many of the traditional graduation ceremony components such as speeches, the senior class video, acknowledgment of each graduate, and presentation of the Class of 2020. The video will be left on the district website for people to view and DVD copies of the virtual graduation will be made available to seniors in the weeks that follow. Monday, May 18th - Cap/Gown/Chromebook Turn In and Diplomas Handed Out The school will be open on Monday, May 18th from 8:00-12:00 for seniors to come and turn in their Caps/Gowns/Tassels and their Chromebooks/Chargers. When a graduate has everything turned in, they will be issued their high school diploma. HAHS staff will be putting away the Chromebooks for next year. Seniors, when you return your gown please have it ironed and on a hanger so it is ready to go for August 2nd. Gowns will be hung up on racks and individually labeled for each student to have ready for them when we convene again for our traditional graduation ceremony. Friday, July 31st - Graduation Practice at 9:00 am in the MS Gym Any senior wanting to walk in graduation will be required to attend graduation practice at 9:00 am in the MS gym to prepare for the graduation ceremony. Sunday, August 2nd - Traditional Graduation at 3:00 pm in the MS Gym On Sunday, August 2nd we will be holding our traditional graduation ceremony. More specific details will be given closer to time. Note: Seniors will not have to rent their cap and gowns a second time as we will still have them on hand.
I wanted to give everyone a few updates regarding some events and happenings. First of all, I wanted to take a second and thank all of our students who are working so very hard to stay engaged and active during our remote learning instruction. Your hard work and dedication is truly inspiring. In terms of updates, to begin with, I wanted to give everyone an update on prom. A makeup date for prom has been set for Saturday, June 13th and we were able to reserve the civic center for the event. However as we have been working to get things finalized, Governor Pritzker has extended the stay at home order through May. We will be keeping the makeup date for prom set for June 13th as we had planned. If however future orders or directives would prohibit us from having prom on that date, we will, unfortunately, have to cancel prom for this year. If this were the case, we would be extending an offer to all current seniors to join us for prom next year. The next few messages I have are for our seniors. In today’s announcements, we have shared a Senior Shout out form for every senior to fill out. This form can be found in the HS office google classroom. We are needing these forms to be filled out by this coming Friday, May 1st. Starting May 1st, we will be running a senior spotlight where we feature a handful of seniors every day that will be posted on our district website and our school social media accounts. We will be focusing on new seniors every day from May 1st through May 17th. The next thing I wanted to let our seniors know is that currently, our Cornjerker Spirit store is selling Senior yard signs. I am pleased to announce that the school district will be purchasing an individual sign for every HAHS senior. Once these signs are ready, I will send out an alert for all seniors and they can be picked up at our normal school open hours on Mon and Fri from 10:00-12:00 and Wed from 4:00-6:00. If seniors would like to purchase additional signs they can be purchased for $15. In addition to the senior signs, we will be using the money that the senior class has raised to purchase gift cards from local area businesses. These gift cards will then be distributed out to our senior class to use later in May. In terms of senior awards and scholarships, we will begin mailing those home directly to the students who are receiving them in the coming weeks. Finally, and I am sure most importantly on our seniors’ minds, is what is going to happen with graduation. I want to let everyone know that we are in the process of finalizing details now for a parade for our seniors, a virtual graduation to be held on May 17th when our graduation was originally supposed to occur, and finally, we will be announcing a rescheduled date for us to hold a traditional graduation ceremony. All of the specifics and details will be formally announced early next week.

As I am sure many of you have already heard, today Gov. Pritzker announced that schools will not be resuming normal in person learning and instruction for the remainder of the school year. As such, schools and districts across the state will continue to utilize remote learning for the rest of this school year. Let me take a second to just acknowledge and say thank you to all of the many students who have continually worked so hard to complete work and stay academically engaged. It is our goal for all our students (Freshmen through Senior) to be fully engaged and working to make sure they are passing their classes so at the end of the semester they will have earned their credits to be on track for when they are to graduate. To all of our seniors, let me say just how sorry I am that so much of what you have been looking forward to has been taken from you. Please know how much our teachers, staff, and community love each and every one of you. Also know that we are working to maintain some of the senior memories and events that everyone looks so forward to. Currently we are working to try and reschedule prom for later this summer. We are also working on graduation plans as well. As these things become finalized, we will let everyone know. As a reminder, all students should be checking their school emails and google classrooms daily for work and materials. If internet accessibility is not available, the school is not is open Mondays and Fridays from 10-12 and Wed from 4-6pm every week to pick up packets, materials, and drop off work. Also Wi-Fi access is available to be accessed every day from our school parking lot and school parking lots throughout the district. Beginning tonight and running through the remainder of the quarantine and mandated school closure, HAHS will be joining schools around the nation in #LightsForTheFight. Schools around the nation are turning on their athletic field lights from 8:00 PM to 8:20 PM each Friday night throughout the quarantine as a sign of support for our students, as well as for all the healthcare workers, first responders, and all other essential workers on the frontlines of the pandemic. A reminder that due to the statewide quarantine measures, no one should gather at the school or fields while the lights are illuminated, the gesture is simply a sign of support. #CornjerkerPride

Seniors: Graduation announcements and accessories will begin to be shipped to your homes later this week and next week from Josten's for everyone who has paid for them. Any student who has yet to pay, they will be delivered to the HS. We are asking that students/families hold off on sending out graduation announcements to family and friends at this time in mandated school closures were to get extended past April 30th. If that were to be the case, Josten's would provide an insert with an updated date/time information to put in the announcements.
After discussion with the ROE, due to the current shelter in place requirement and for the safety of our students, the auditorium will no longer be accessible to students to download or submit materials via the school Wi-Fi during school open hours on Mon, Wed, and Fri during food pantry access and /materials homework pickup. The district is working on a plan to expand Wi-Fi abilities for students. Once finalized we will be sure to share that information ASAP. #CornjerkerPride
Starting this week students will begin Remote Learning during our mandated school closure time. (A copy of the HAHS Remote Learning Plan can be found on our HS website) Every Monday teachers will be posting instructional materials, assignments, and information to students to be completed by Friday. It is very important that students are checking their school emails, and Google Classroom daily as these will be the primary methods of communication between students and teachers. As assignments are graded, information will be sent back directly to the students. DACC College Express students need to be continually checking Blackboard and their school emails for information and assignments from their college instructors. Students completing credit recovery through Edgenuity, it is extremely important that you are getting these classes completed. Also starting Monday, the school will have open hours on Mondays and Fridays from 10:00-12:00 and Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00pm. Students will be able to get needed worksheets and materials if they don't have the internet. Students can also access the food pantry for any needed food or hygiene items they may need. The auditorium will also be available to use for students needing to use the school wifi to get or submit assignments as well during that time. HAHS Staff and administration are here to provide help and assistance throughout the entirety of our closure. Students please continue to commit to and engage in this new remote learning environment. For your connivence, printed copies will again be made available as well to be distributed at all lunch pick up locations starting March 30th. Thursday, February 6th, students will be handed out the Course Catalog for next year during their English classes. The Course Handbook includes Course Descriptions, 4-yr Plan Outlines, and Student Course Guides/Sign-up Sheets. Then on February 10th admins and the counseling department will be meeting with each grade level to discuss the course catalog in detail. We ask that parents sit down with their students to review required courses and elective choices. Students need to return their parent/guardian signed course outline to the HS office as soon as possible after Feb 10th to begin the scheduling process for the 2020-2021 school year for your student.
The Data, Deserts, and Decisions meeting that was scheduled to be at the DACC Higher Learning Center here in Hoopeston for this evening has been canceled. Parents can still contact the HLC in the future to set up an individual appointment for their student to discuss options for the future.
Reminder to Parents: When dropping off or picking up your student(s), please remember to pull into the parking lot instead of doing so in the streets so traffic in the street isn't being held up.
This Spring we will be having licensed Dentists and Hygienists coming to our school to spend a day doing dental exams. They will also be cleaning teeth, giving fluoride treatments and sealants (if needed) to eligible students. This program is for all grade levels, if you would like to participate in this free program please have your student stop in the office and pick up an application. The application will need to be filled out and signed by a parent/guardian. If you filled a form out at registration back in August, there is no need to do one again. Reminder that a sports physical clinic will be held tomorrow, May 30th, from 12:15-2:30 at Charlotte Ann Russell Medical Center. Any child playing sports next year is welcome to attend, however, any child entering 6th or 9th grade will need a school physical and not a sports physical. Cost will be $15, and parents do not need to be present with their child. If the parent will not be present, they must sign the IHSA physical form and their child can take it to the clinic with them. Copies of the IHSA physical form are available in the high school and middle school office.

The Freshmen Field Trip buses returning from the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago are ahead of schedule and will be arriving at the school at approximately 5:30 pm. Parents please pick your students up in the parking lot at this time.
Reminder: Tomorrow Tue April 23rd is the Freshmen Field Trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. The charter buses will be in the parking lot by 6:00 am and we will be leaving promptly at 6:30 am. Students will have all meals provided to them during the trip. Buses are scheduled to be back at Hoopeston by 6:30 pm. If there is any change in the return time, I will notify everyone through another all call.

Congratulations to HAHS Alumni Lauren (Houmes) Leigh who ran in the 135th Annual Boston Marathon today!! She completed the course in 3 hours and 25 minutes, averaging 7:37 mile the whole 26.2 miles. Lauren was a 4 year track and cross country runner at HAHS before going to run at Bradley University. Way to go Lauren!! #CornjerkerPride
This is just a reminder to all freshmen and parents/guardians of freshmen that the last day we are accepting parent permission slips for freshmen to attend the field trip to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry on Tue April 23rd is tomorrow Fri April 5th. On Tuesday, April 9th students in grades 9-11 will be taking the PSAT/SAT test. Testing will begin in the morning and conclude around lunch time. Because seniors will not be taking the test, they will not report to school that day. Juniors will be dismissed after they have finished testing and eating lunch. There will be no busses ran at the early dismissal time, if this should impact your student and you wish them to stay at school the entire day, please notify the school. 9th and 10th grade students will follow a normal schedule at the conclusion of their testing. Hello. This is John Klaber principal at Hoopeston Area High School. I wanted to inform you that today our high school in conjunction with Hoopeston Area Middle School and the Hoopeston Police Department held a successful Rally Drill at 2:15 this afternoon. The purpose of this drill was to practice what to do in the event of an emergency situation that would warrant a school evacuation. The purpose of all our drills is to prepare students and staff for a variety of situations that could occur. As always, our first goal is the safety of your children. We have an exciting new project we are working on at the HS called, "the Hall of Champions." This project will consist of us creating individual displays to celebrating the college, career, and life successes of our recent graduates which will display throughout our high school hallways. If you know anyone starting with the class of 2000 through the the class of 2018 who has or is currently achieving something great in college, career, or life, please submit a picture, short sentence or two describing what is is they did or are currently doing, and their graduation year to the HS office or by emailing them to Kevin Root at email@example.com Our hope is to collect over 50 of these submissions before Christmas and then we will be revealing the displays to our students when they return second semester.

At the HS we are currently working on setting up a new Cornjerker Spirit Store to be ran during school starting 2nd semester. In order to make room for this exciting new project, spring cleaning had to start early and we are having to remove all of the old VHS tapes from years past out to clear room. We have VHS tapes, mini cassette tapes, and even a few DVDs from school functions and events spanning over many years. Before we discard these to make room for our new spirit store, we wanted to first offer them to the public. Tapes we have found include graduations, sweetheart dinners, concerts, sporting events, etc. from the last 30+ years. If you or anyone you know would have interest in any of these tapes, please set up an appointment at the high school to go through them. This will be open to the public until Thursday December 20th. After that the remaining videos will be disposed of.

The Link Crew invites all HS students to their 3rd Annual Scary Movie Night at 6:30pm in the HS gym. The doors will open at 6:15 pm and we ask students to enter through the HS office doors. Admission is free and students can bring blankets and pillows as they lay on the gym floor to watch the movie. We hope to see you there.

We would like to invite everyone to tonight's HS/MS Fall Concert at 7:00 pm in the MS gym. ALso we wanted to let everyone know that the FAFSA Financial Aid workshop that had to be rescheduled has been moved to Monday Oct 29th from 5:00-7:00 pm and will be held in the HS library.
All Sophomores will be attending the DACC Manufacturing and Technology Day on Friday, October 12. We will leave school at 8:15 and return at approximately 11:45. Students who have 1st lunch will be eating 2nd lunch on Friday. We are looking forward to this great opportunity for our sophomore students!
