Thad Matta

Thad Matta has always had a love for basketball. That love grew when he participated on the Hoopeston-East Lynn basketball teams from 1981 to 1985.

While at Hoopeston-East Lynn, Thad participated on the 1984 basketball team that played at the IHSA Class A State Tournament and returned to place 3rdin state the following year. Thad averaged 24.2 points per game as a senior and finished 3rd in the ballotingfor Mr. Basketball.

While in high school, Thad was named to the Chicago Tribune All State Team, the Chicago Sun Times All State Team, the IBCA All State Team, Assembly Hall All Tournament First Team and was the Wauseca Conference MVP. He broke the school’s single game scoring record with a 45 point game against Catlin.

Thad attended Southern Illinois University where he played on the Men’s Basketball Team for one year before he transferred to Butler University to finish out his basketball career.

Still in love with the game, Thad began his coaching career as an assistant at Indiana State. He has had assistant coaching stints at Butler, Miami of Ohio, and Western Carolina.

He was awarded his first head coaching position at Butler University before he transitioned to Xavier University. 
Thad coaches 13 years as head coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
