Jim Matta

Coach Matta attended Eureka College where he played both football and basketball.  He captained his senior year in football and was captain both his junior and senior year in basketball.  He received his Bachelors Degree in history and physical education and his Master’s Degree from Indiana State in physical education.

In 1967 Coach Matta came to Hoopeston and taught history and physical education and coached football and basketball.  In 1972 he became Athletic Director.  While at Hoopeston he coached boys basketball, football, girls basketball and baseball.  Coach Matta retired in 2000.

Through the years Coach Matta has received many awards including “Coach of the Year” from Eureka College, being inducted into to Eureka College Hall of Fame, and was selected to receive the Illinois Basketball Officials Association Athletic Achievement Award.

Coach Matta now resides in Bluffton, South Carolina with his wife, Ellanat, where he plays golf every day, weather permitting.   They have three children - Greg Matta who is a high school coach in Kennesaw ,GA; Thad Matta who is the men’s basketball coach at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio;  and Karah Viola who is a college counselor for a high school in Greenville, SC.
