Good Afternoon Hoopeston Area Families,
Hoopeston Area CUSD #11 recognizes the importance of protecting students and staff, and is doing everything in our power to keep our schools open and in-session.
The Illinois Department of Public Health has categorized basketball as a higher risk level activity. IDPH guidance classifies basketball at a Higher-risk sport and may currently participate at Level 1. Level 1 is defined as No-contact practices, and training only. Hoopeston Area CUSD #11 will continue to follow the guidelines of ISBE/IDPH for educational activities to keep our students and staff safe and our schools open. Click the link below to read the IDPH Sports safety guidance.
https://www.dph.illinois.gov/covid19/community-guidance/sports-safety-guidance
The statement released by IHSA does not identify the liability risk a School District would be accepting if they made the decision to defy the IDPH guidance. In plain language, this means the district could be held responsible, if any negative outcomes occur. In consultation with legal counsel and liability insurance carriers, Hoopeston Area CUSD #11 will comply with the IDPH guidance and restrict basketball to Level 1 No-contact practices, and training only.
Hoopeston Area CUSD #11 will continue to await direction from the state about when it is safe to resume play before taking any further action to schedule our basketball season. We remain grateful for the hard work that students, families, and our staff have done to keep students protected and our schools open for in-person instruction, and we are committed to doing our best to keep everyone safe.

Hello! This is John Klaber principal at HAHS. Tomorrow Thursday, April 25th, HAHS, in partnership with Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center and Community Partners, is conducting a mock crash at Hoopeston Area High School at 9:00 AM. The mock car crash aims to send a reminder of the dangers and consequences of unsafe driving behaviors — such as
drinking and driving and not buckling up — prior to prom and the end of the school year.
The mock crash will be using real crashed vehicles set up on school grounds and student participants to dramatically act out roles as crash victims. The school’s student body will watch the demonstration and learn how emergency responders conduct rescue efforts in real-time. This includes the use of emergency vehicles and a life flight helicopter arriving on the scene.
The dramatization, followed by a school assembly, will last from 9:00-10:45.
Participating in the event are the Hoopeston Fire Department, Hoopeston Police Department, Arrow Ambulance, AirLife Helicopter service, Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center, Anderson Funeral Home, Paul’s Towing service, and a Vermilion County Coroner representative.

Due to the low wind chill, Hoopeston Area will be running a 2-hour late start today, Monday, March 4th. School start times and bus schedules will be 2 hours later than normal. There will be no morning Pre-K at Maple School.

Hoopeston Area School District Press Release
The Board of Education of Hoopeston Area School District is aware of misinformation in the community regarding the schools' policy about various matters. In an effort to correct the record, each and every school in the district calls the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. Students in early grades are taught the Pledge, and all students are asked to stand and recite the Pledge every day. No teacher in the schools is permitted to discourage students from standing for the Pledge or otherwise interfere with their showing of respect for the law's requirement that students be asked to reflect respect for our country. Even still, the school district fully understands and respects students' Constitutional rights to peaceably refrain from the Pledge during the school day.
It is not District policy to comment on individual employment matters. Teachers are required to fully implement the school district's educational program, and the District is aware of no instance that a teacher has directed a student or group of students not to participate in the Pledge, and is aware of no instance that a teacher has discouraged any student from standing and reciting the Pledge. The school district and its staff have never asked for or ordered a student's vehicle to be relocated due to an expression of speech.
The school district fully supports its' students rights to, without disruption to education, peacefully and safely express their individual political and personal beliefs at school.
