1985-86 Boys Basketball Team

“A team of destiny” was the slogan for this remarkable team of talent in 1986. After two consecutive trips to the IHSA Class A state basketball tournament, this team returned for a third year to take another 3rd place finish in the prestigious tournament.

Leading up to the 1986 state finish, this group of young men compiled championship trophies in two consecutive Wauseca Conference finishes, the Rossville Holiday Tournament and their own Hoopeston East Lynn Cornjerker Classic.
The team spent the entire 1986 year seated in the top five teams in the state of Illinois. They finished the preseason ranked second in the state.

This team broke numerous records over their career at Hoopeston East Lynn. They hold the record for best season record of 32-2, most consecutive wins with 26, and top team shooting percentage with a 54%. They also set an IHSA Class A state record for three straight state appearances and the most steals in a state tournament series with 32 steals. Numerous individual records were also set during the team’s career. Dave Busch set a record of 448 career blocked shots and Steve Rieches broke the IHSA Class A steal record with eight steals in a single game.
